Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids with antioxidant activity that must be introduced with the diet because the body is unable to synthesize them.

Predominantly present in green leafy vegetables (broccoli, spinach, cabbage and Brussels sprouts), they are responsible for the yellow color of wheat and Tagetes erecta, plants particularly rich in these pigments.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are distributed mainly in the ocular tissues, depositing themselves in the retina, in particular at the level of the macula, where they perform an important defense action.

Lutein is able to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are formed during metabolic processes in the eye, also due to light radiation with a particular wavelength (blue light).

Due to its antioxidant action, lutein can help maintain the functionality and integrity of sensitive ocular structures (retina, iris, lens).
