Phytosterols are bioactive components of plants, present in various foods of plant origin. Randomized controlled trials have indicated that the consumption of tea extracts has a positive effect on circulating lipoprotein levels. Green tea catechin treatment modulates the activity of key enzymes in endogenous cholesterol synthesis such as HMG CoA reductase.
