Focus

Acerola (Malpighia glabra L.): it is the fruit of the Amazon forest enhanced in its high content of vitamin C. In nature, alongside ascorbic acid (defined as factor C1) we find constantly associated with another factor (defined as factor C2) which together form the complex C, the true substance with a vitamin action. In fact, in the fruits of Acerola there are also bioflavonoids (factor C2) which appear to have a synergistic action with factor C1. Chemically, factor C2 is a flavonoid (pentahydroxy-3-flavanol), which occurs naturally in the form of a stable compound, and is capable of increasing the rate of reduction of dehydroascorbic acid into ascorbic acid. Furthermore, the C2 factor also has a catalytic action, proposing itself from time to time as a donor or as a hydrogen acceptor. The simultaneous presence of these two factors (C1 / C2) improves the use and absorption and therefore increases the beneficial effect of vitamin C. Studies started as early as 1926 by Bezssonoff and completed in 1977 by Gazave and Parrot, have definitively clarified that the cause of scurvy is a double C1-C2 avitaminosis and that each single factor alone is not capable of exerting the antiscorbutigenic action.
