MAIN EFFECTS OF CITRATES IN THE PREVENTION OF KIDNEY LITHASIS: Citrates determine the formation in urine of soluble complexes with calcium, which in turn cause a reduction in the concentration of calcium ions and in the urinary saturation of oxalate (CaOx) and phosphate of Calcium CaP). Furthermore, Citrate has a direct inhibiting action on spontaneous nucleation and on the growth of CaOx and CaP crystals. The alkaline citrate, by increasing the urinary PH, decreases the formation of calcium oxalate crystals.
