Arnica (Arnica montana L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant that lives in Europe, especially in mountain areas; in Italy we can find it in the highlands of the Alps and the Apennines up to an altitude of 2,000 meters, and we recognize it by its large, particularly fragrant yellow-orange flowers (it blooms in the early summer months).

It belongs to the Compositae (or Asteraceae) family like Chamomile.

Uses of Arnica Montana

Its flowers (but also the rhizome and roots) are used in herbal medicine as a natural anti-inflammatory and pain reliever remedy, especially in the following cases:

> muscle pain due to excessive fatigue;
> muscle pain due to contractures, tears, bruises;
> joint pain due to rheumatism or sprains
> superficial phlebitis, trauma bruises, chilblains.

Therefore Arnica is useful both in cases of static pain and in those of traumatic origin, and in superficial circulatory problems.

Regardless of the circulatory phenomena (phlebitis, hematomas, chilblains) Arnica is especially effective in cases where the pain worsens with movement and instead improves with rest; in cases of persistent pain, however, it is preferable to use other types of anti-inflammatories.

The forms of use of Arnica are mainly external (creams, gels, ointments, tinctures), to be applied on the painful part.

There are forms of oral intake (but we are talking about Homeopathy, and no longer about Phytotherapy) which still contain very low concentrations; the use of homeopathic forms is to be practiced under the supervision of a doctor-homeopath.
