Mannitol what it is for

Mannitol (E421) is a polyalcohol with seven hydroxyl groups at the level of the aliphatic chain composed of seven carbon saturated atoms. From a food point of view, mannitol belongs to the category of stabilizers, thickeners, gelling agents and emulsifiers. It is actually mostly used as a sweetener.
It was originally a drug, being a mild diuretic (it forms a hypertonic solution and draws blood by osmosis into the renal tubules). Mannitol is a substance that is easily found naturally in algae and fungi and the name derives from the manna (the sap of the ash tree, in the image) from which it can be obtained.

Contraindications

The main complaints caused by an excess of mannitol are gastrointestinal (laxative effect).

Method of use or dosage

The acceptable daily dose of mannitol is 50 mg / kg of weight, although, regardless of the unpleasant side effects, it is not dangerous for health, being a full-fledged carbohydrate, easily managed by our body.

Who Should Use It

By whom it should be used from a food point of view - Since there is no real sweetener gain, mannitol can only be used advantageously by those who want to take advantage of its laxative effects. Using mannitol as a sweetener, instead of sugar, in combination with a diet rich in fiber (and possibly also in lactulose and with the simultaneous use of antimeteorics), can help to improve chronic constipation.
