ALUMINUM SALTS

Aluminum compounds are among the active ingredients of deodorants because they block the sweat glands and have a bacteriostatic action: that is, they limit the proliferation of bacteria and the odors they can produce. Some researchers have speculated that aluminum can be absorbed through the skin and modify estrogen receptors in breast tissue. Since many cancers respond to estrogen concentrations, aluminum could, in theory, increase the risk of getting sick. At the moment, however, there is no reliable evidence that aluminum can reach the mammary gland through the skin (one of the most serious studies has shown the passage of an almost negligible amount, equal to 0.012%). The amount of metal that reaches the breast through food is much higher than that which reaches the breast through the skin. Consequently, experts believe that there is, at the current stage of research, any concrete link between aluminum in deodorants and breast cancer.
