Boswellia (Boswellia serrata) is a plant native to India and China belonging to the Burseraceae family, also known as the frankincense plant.

From its bark a gum resin rich in boswellic acids is obtained by engraving, used since ancient times as incense in cultural and religious ceremonies.

The terpenoid fraction of the resin of boswellia contains AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid), an acronym that groups the names of the acids that are the main active constituents.
