Burdock (Arctium lappa) is a herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family that grows spontaneously from the plain up to 1800 meters above sea level.
Popular tradition recognizes burdock roots as precious purifying virtues useful against numerous skin disorders, with multiple synergistic actions.
The root of the burdock acts specifically on the skin, for its antiseptic activity which is particularly useful as an adjuvant in the treatment of skin rashes and furunculosis.
Burdock has numerous beneficial properties known since ancient times; in the past, among the various healthy applications, it was used as a diuretic and to treat eczema and wounds.
Recent studies have revealed its varied composition: the root contains inulin, lignans, B vitamins, essential oils, bitter substances and tannins.
The extract of burdock root, in comparison with some plant extracts, was found to be among the most effective herbs in promoting skin elasticity. In fact, it inhibits elastase, an enzyme that damages elastin, a protein responsible for protecting the skin to which it confers elasticity.
