Burdock root

Botanical name: Arctium lappa, A. Minus. Common name: Burdock. Description: biennial herbaceous plant that in the first year emits only a few basal leaves, ovate cordate with toothed margin, soft green and hairless on the upper side. The second year produces an erect flower stem from 50 to 200 cm high. The flowers are purplish pink. The achenes oblong and compressed, brownish gray with black spots and pappus with short bristles. It blooms between July and August. Balsamic time: the roots and sometimes also the leaves are used. The roots are collected in the autumn of the first vegetative year and in the spring of the second, before the flower scape is released. The leaves are collected between the spring and summer of the second year, before the flowers appear. Properties and indications: Burdock is known as an excellent strengthener of the immune system. A tonic for the liver, kidneys and lungs. It is a blood purifier with the ability to neutralize toxins and cleanse the lymphatic system. Its antibacterial and antifungal action as well as its tumor-protective compounds are proven. It is an excellent remedy that can be used both internally and externally for the treatment of the most common skin diseases. It has known diuretic properties, stimulating the hepatobiliary functions. Used internally, it has a discreet antidiabetic-hypoglycemic action given by the simultaneous presence in the root of Inulin (up to 45%) and B vitamins that interact in glucose metabolism. In the East it is used for its strengthening and nourishing properties. In China it is mentioned with the name of "Niu bang" as a remedy since 502 after Christ. It was used by the American Indian tribes Mimac and Menomonee for skin diseases. Ayurvedic medicine knows it for its action on blood and plasma tissue and is used for skin allergies, fevers, and kidney stones. Many scientific studies have demonstrated the anticancer activity of Burdock on animals. The term "Burdock factor" was coined by scientists from the Kawasaki School of Medicine, Okayama, Japan. In laboratory studies it was found that the "Burdock factor" was active against the HIV virus (the AIDS virus). The inulin contained in Burdock has the power to stimulate the surface of white blood cells helping them to work better.

The dark green or yellowish leaves are covered with yellow fuzz and have an orange tip. The bark is very wrinkled. The healing properties are contained in the fibers of the inner part of the bark which is used fresh or dried to be pulverized. Properties and indications: the mucilage of the cortex favors the decongestion of the joints making it an excellent remedy for osteoarthritis. The OR cortex is also indicated for coughs, pharyngitis, neurological problems, stomach and intestines. Contains inulin which helps the liver, spleen and pancreas.
