Gaseous colic or infant colic are characterized by the sudden onset, in an infant who is otherwise in good health, of inconsolable crying, which lasts more than 3 hours a day for 3 days or more a week and for 3 or more consecutive weeks. This is Wessel's so-called "rule of three", formulated in 1954 by pediatrician Morris Arthur Wessel. They affect infants of both sexes, all ethnicities and all socioeconomic classes starting from the second month of life and tend to disappear after the fourth month. The most obvious hypothesis is that the cause is an excess of gas produced by intestinal bacteria or ingested in the intestine (aerophagia). An excess of gas in the intestine causes irritability, swelling of the abdomen and emission of gas with belching and flatulence. This hypothesis has not been confirmed by any scientific study. Another widespread hypothesis is that colic is caused by milk allergy. However, gas colic has the same frequency in both breastfed and formula fed. Furthermore, numerous studies have shown that switching the baby's feeding to a formula without milk (for example based on soy, rice or hydrolysates) does not improve colic in any way. Other hypotheses are based on the psychology of the infant, on the particular difficulty that some of them encounter in adapting to the numerous new stimuli that surround them, difficulties that would be manifested with inconsolable crying. Still another hypothesis is that some infants find it difficult to control their emotions and therefore experience bouts of inconsolable crying. Control would only be achieved later, with the maturation of the central nervous system and would lead to the disappearance of colic. Gas colic resolves spontaneously around 4-6 months of life. A lot of patience and a good dose of balance are therefore required.
