Some of the mechanisms responsible for dry skin are determined by altered skin physiology.
Many women or men use moisturizers to keep their skin soft, but it is now recognized that creams can only work if the skin barrier is kept efficient.
We present a small summary of the main functions of skin physiology that aim to make you understand what has been mentioned.
We must first know that the skin is made up of four layers:
- the stratum corneum
- the epidermis with viable cells
- the dermis
- the hypodermis
The stratum corneum constitutes the outermost layer of the skin and is the first layer in contact with topical products and undergoes their modifications. It has the function of protecting cells, lipids also play a primary role in the formation and maintenance of the integrity of the underlying Epidermal Barrier Function of the epidermis.
The epidermis is made up of three layers of keratinocytes: those of the basal layer, those of the spinous layer and those of the granular layer.
The dermis represents the large mass of the skin, the cellular component of the dermis is mainly composed of fibroblasts.
The skin also plays an important immunological activity. The cutaneous immune system is made up of skin dendritic cells (mainly Langerhans cells) specialized in the presentation of antigens to T lymphocytes that will induce an immune response and to keratinocytes capable of producing a series of cytokines that will activate an immediate inflammatory response.
The horny lamellae contain within them a family of scleroproteins called keratins which confer structural rigidity to the stratum corneum. The envelope of the horny lamellae is formed by other proteins such as loricrin, involucrin and keratoyalins. All of these proteins have numerous bonds to water which they hold or release according to external needs and conditions. A correct ratio between these proteins and water contributes to the elasticity of the lamellar system of the stratum corneum. So it is clear that an excess of water or a defect can cause damage to the structure of the proteins and therefore to the physiological maintenance of the stratum corneum.
The Interlamellar Lipids
They are produced by keratinocytes as well as keratins, and should not be confused with those produced by the sebaceous or sebum glands. The interlamellar lipids take this name because they are arranged around the horny lamellae, occluding the interstices. In this way they perform two important functions: that of preventing or regulating the passages between the spaces left free by the slats and that of allowing the movement of the slats themselves. In other words, they act as an elastic cement. Therefore a lack of lipids or their degradation due to the continuous use of common detergents or solvents, will certainly cause a form of desquamation. Ceramides are the most important and represented lipids among the intercellular lipids.
The Flow of Water
The set of horny lamellae and interlamellar lipids form a selective barrier. This barrier mainly regulates the passage of water through the epidermis or Trans Epidermal Water Loss
Corneal Hydration
Contrary to what one might imagine, CITOVIS CREAM guarantees constant hydration of the stratum corneum as it is already above the epidermal layer, and soaked in water. For the stratum corneum to "dehydrate" it is necessary that all the proteins that have the function of binding water or the lipids that retain it are altered or absent. Therefore, to keep the stratum corneum hydrated, it is not only necessary to supply water from the outside with a simple "moisturizing" cream, but to repair the function of the specific barrier with a cream.
The rules for keeping the stratum corneum in order and preventing damage
CITOVIS CREMA is suitable for maintaining the order of the skin barrier which is ensured through the daily treatment of its application in the morning and in the evening, it has been studied for every type of dermatological alteration that occurs with different forms of dryness and irritation of the face and neck. and all those factors that determine poor protein and lipid efficiency.
It gives energy to all cellular levels in the dermis, and induces the continuous intracellular formation of protective antioxidant and antiradical molecules observed in research studies on the basic molecules that compose it, determining effects of prevention of skin aging.
CITOVIS CREAM is recommended for people with different levels of sensitivity and nature of the skin, it does not contain GMOs and is equipped with substances with natural and biodynamic anti-irritant properties extracted from manufacturing processes in full respect of the environment and human health.
