D-Mannose is a food supplement based on D-mannose, a simple sugar extracted from corn and bearberry.

Thanks to its protective action on uroepithelial cells, D-mannose represents a natural and safe alternative for the control of urinary tract infections and infectious cystitis.

The bearberry, one of the most widely used medicinal plants to promote the functionality of the urinary tract and the drainage of body fluids, cooperates in this action, thanks to the presence of arbutin, a compound with antiseptic activity.

According to the most recent data, urinary tract infections have a high incidence: they affect one in two women at least once in their life.

How does D-Mannose behave, what does it do? Simple, it inhibits the adhesion of Escherichia coli, the main bacterium responsible for urinary infections, on the uroepithelial cells. D-mannose binds to small "tentacles" present on pathogenic bacteria (in addition to Escherichia coli also to Klebsiella, Shigella, Pseudomonas and Salmonella), preventing them from sticking to the walls of the bladder.

This sugar shows an adhesive capacity to bacteria higher than that of the bacteria themselves towards the bladder and this allows to detach those already anchored to the mucosa and attract those that have penetrated deeply.

Mannose also prevents bacterial invasion and subsequent biofilm formation, which makes bacteria unassailable by antibodies and antibiotics.

Furthermore, D-mannose binds not only to bacteria but also to the toxins they produce.

Mannose is also credited with the ability to rebuild the protective layer of the bladder mucosa.
