WHAT IS OSTEOPENIA?

Osteopenia is a pathology that affects the bones of the body and is due to an incorrect synthesis of the osteoid matrix. In the patient affected by the disease there is a mineral density below the normal values but it is not yet possible to speak of osteoporosis because there are no fractures.

Osteopenia manifests itself through a reduction in bone mass which causes the bones to thin and also makes them weaker.

The pathology manifests itself towards the 3rd and 4th decade of life and mainly affects women after menopause even if at times it can also affect young people who have not reached an appropriate bone maturation.

WHAT IS OSTEOMALACIA?

Osteomalacia is a disease that affects the bones making them fragile and therefore very exposed to pain, fractures and serious malformations.

It is a demineralizing metabolic pathology that manifests itself through a high presence of non-calcified osteoid tissue due to a lack of vitamin D or calcium. It differs from osteoporosis because the bone structure is normal but with a low mineral content.

The disease mainly affects adults while, when it affects children in whom the bone structure is in the phase of full growth, it is called rickets.

SYMPTOMS

The pathology of osteomalacia is initially asymptomatic. As it begins to progress the patient feels pain in the bones and mainly along the spine, pelvis, hips, legs and ribs. Often bone pain is accompanied by other symptoms:

• Muscle aches
• Decreased muscle strength
• Difficulty walking
• Arched legs
• High risk of fractures

WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS?

Osteoporosis is defined as “a systemic disease of the skeleton, characterized by reduced mineral mass and microstructural deterioration of the bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and a greater risk of fractures”.

In summary, the risk of arriving at osteoporosis is the result of the combination of three factors:

• The "peak of bone mass", our bone capital reached around 25-30 years
• The speed with which bone loss proceeds which inevitably begins between the ages of 40 and 50, and in particular, for women, starting from menopause
• The duration of this loss, which obviously depends on the longevity of the individual, and which in women is much longer the earlier the menopause is premature

A correct prevention program, based on a correct diet and regular physical activity, can significantly modify the first two factors, and therefore significantly reduce the risk of osteoporotic bone fractures.

SYMPTOMS

Osteoporosis is a difficult disease to recognize: most of the time it does not show any signs of itself. This is why it has been called the "silent thief", because it steals the butt of our bone for years, without realizing it. Only in some cases, osteoporosis can be accompanied by bone pain, which however is often confused and associated with the pain caused by other diseases which is very common in the elderly.
