Mycosis and nails: onychomycosis

In the event that mycosis affects the nails, both of the hands and feet, this is called onychomycosis. The most common causes of onychomycosis are related to humid and hot environments such as, for example, sweaty feet in closed shoes. Even the prolonged use of nail polishes that do not allow normal breathing can cause yellowing of the nail which becomes more fragile and less shiny.

Infected toenails can then act as a reservoir for fungi, facilitating their transmission to other areas of the body and possibly to other people as well.

A nail affected by onychomycosis can be recognized by these signs:

• thickening of the nail
• yellowing of the nail
• white spots on the nails
