The Devil's Claw is a perennial climbing plant belonging to the Pedialiacee family and is so named because of the fruits that have, on their surface, thorny, hook-shaped outgrowths. It originates from the desert regions of the Kalahari, in the southern part of the African continent.

Known for a relatively short time in the West, the Devil's Claw is a plant widely used, since ancient times, in southwestern Africa and Madagascar to treat feverish states. The functionality of the Devil's Claw is linked to the numerous active ingredients found inside the roots of the plant including: iridoid glycosides (harpagoside, harpagid, procumbide), which are the most represented component, triterpenes (oleanolic acid, ursolic acid) ), flavonoids (canferol, luteolin, fisetin) and phytosterols (beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol).

Experts believe that it is the whole of these active ingredients, rather than the single substance, that determines the overall effect.
