CURIOSITIES AND INFORMATION FOR THE CONSUMER

The intestinal flora is made up of a rich population of microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts, fungi and protozoa) which, after birth, colonize the gastrointestinal tract supporting some biochemical functions. Normally the organism and these microorganisms live in symbiosis, that is, in a situation of mutual benefit which takes the name of eubiosis. The intestinal bacterial flora supports and promotes important functions:
- promotes digestive processes through the production of enzymes;
- synthesizes Vitamin K and B vitamins, in particular B12;
- contributes to the metabolism of bile pigments;
- produces substances with antimicrobial action;
- modulates the immune system;
- enhances the function of the intestinal barrier;
- regulates the motility of the intestine, the composition of gases and feces and the pH of the gastrointestinal environment.

The condition of balance between the organism and the intestinal bacterial flora can easily change, resulting in an imbalance known as dysbiosis. The causes of this condition can be multiple:

1. diet rich in fats, sugars, red meats and low in fruit and vegetables;
2. hearty evening meals;
3. alcohol abuse;
4. stress generated by alterations in the sleep-wake rhythm, intense work activity, pressing commitments and daily responsibilities;
5. insufficient physical activity;
6. diseases, infections or immunological deficits;
7. drugs, such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, anti-flu, antidepressants, contraceptives and anxiolytics, which, while alleviating the symptoms of the disease, also act on the intestinal bacterial flora, altering it;
8. food dyes, preservatives, pesticides, but also heavy metals such as aluminum, mercury and other toxic metals that can reach the intestine through the food chain.

Symptoms of dysbiosis involve the whole organism. In fact, in addition to poor digestion, an increase in intestinal gas, with consequent abdominal swelling, frequent diarrhea and / or constipation, dysbiosis involves a decrease in the immune defenses and therefore an increased susceptibility of the organism. Dysbiosis also causes general ailments, such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, nervousness, and mood swings. For the physiological well-being of the intestine and its functional integrity, it is useful to consume vegetables, cooked or raw, fruit and take plenty of fluids between meals.
