GUARANA ', a large vine from the Amazon rainforest, was already known as a medicine in Europe long before the botanists Humboldt, Bonplant and Kinth described the plant at the beginning of the last century. The seeds are collected when ripe and are extracted from an aril which is the fruit of the plant. In Brazilian preparations, the roasted seeds, crushed and freed from integuments by sieving, are triturated with the addition of water to obtain a paste which is then dried and fumigated. The part used is the seed.

Active ingredients: purine bases including mainly caffeine (it is the richest drug in this alkaloid; theophylline and theobromine are present only in trace amounts), saponins, tannins, resins.

Properties: toning, stimulating, astringent, diuretic, diaphoretic.

Indications: asthenia, nervous depression; fatigue, convalescence; adjuvant in obesity and weight overload (stimulates the secretion of adrenaline which, among its many functions, also has the property of letting fats come out of adipocytes by burning them); in diarrhea and intestinal fermentation.

Side effects: the abuse can cause in some individuals strong nervous excitement that counteracts the stimulating effect that predisposes to the well-being of the organism. The caffeine-tannin link seems to avoid, due to the granular organic absorption, the well-known and feared side effects of coffee, first of all insomnia. If used as an astringent, consult your doctor if diarrhea lasts for more than 3-4 days.

It is recommended to take 2 capsules morning and noon at the beginning of meals as a stimulant and 2-4 capsules a day as an astringent.
