Tincture

It is a climbing perennial plant with a robust creeping rhizome from which numerous stems sprout. The alternate leaves have a long petiole which has two glands at the base of the leaf; the flap is webbed-lobed with an acute apex and serrated margin. The solitary flowers on a long peduncle have five thin white petals with a crown of purplish filaments inside. PASSIFLORA grows wild in the southern United States, but is currently grown everywhere as a medicinal plant.

ACTIVE PRINCIPLES

Flavonoids (vitexin), maltol, coumarin derivatives, armanic alkaloids, essence.

PROPERTY

Antispasmodic, sedative (without depressive effect), calming, hypnotic.

The alkaloids contained in PASSIFLORA are derivatives of b-carboline which has central stimulating properties. The sedative action is therefore probably due to a synergy between different compounds, including certainly maltol (present however in very modest quantities) which has a depressing activity on spontaneous movements and significantly enhances the duration of sleep induced by barbiturates.

INDICATIONS

Insomnia of nervous origin, restlessness, anxiety, tachycardia, menopausal disorders, cramps and abdominal pain.

RECOMMENDED DOSES

Capsules: 1-2 capsules 2 times a day.

Half dose is recommended for children and elderly people.
