Monascus purpureus is a fermented red yeast rich in monacolins, substances effective in reducing cholesterol levels.
An appropriate fermentation of the rice by Monascus purpureus enriches the final product with substances similar to the drugs most used to fight high cholesterol (statins) which can help reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood.
For this reason, fermented red rice is proposed to keep cholesterol levels within the norm and to reduce them when you are already struggling with high cholesterol situations.
EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) has authorized the claim that monacolin K present in fermented red rice contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. However, this claim can only be used in the case of products that provide a daily intake of monacolin K from fermented red rice equal to 10 mg.
Berberine is an isoquinoloin alkaloid present in several plants of the Berberidaceae family.
However, the mechanism by which this substance reduces plasma cholesterol levels differs from that exercised by statins. While these drugs decrease the synthesis of endogenous cholesterol, berberine increases the activity and number of liver LDL receptors, facilitating the removal of "bad cholesterol" from the blood.
However, the association of berberine with statins can produce an interesting synergistic effect, also due to its ability to inhibit a protein (PCSK9) responsible for the partial degradation of LDL receptors in the liver (which statins tend to promote).
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) plays its primary role in cellular energy metabolism: in the mitochondrion; through the Krebs cycle, glucose and oxygen are transformed into cellular energy (ATP).
CoQ10 decreases with aging, with malnutrition, with some drugs (states), and after intense muscular effort; in these cases the only useful source of CoQ10 is dietary supplementation.
Statins used to lower cholesterol significantly reduce the biosynthesis of CoQ10. Chronic CoQ10 deficiency can lead to muscle weakness and heart failure
