Essential oil

From a chemical point of view, essential oils are the set of volatile substances obtained from plants by pressing, steam distillation or extraction using volatile solvents.

Those obtained by distillation are often in liquid form, of various colors (generally from yellow to brown), those obtained by other methods are semi-solid.

They often consist of mixtures of over 50 components, among which we find above all terpene derivatives and oxygenated organic compounds. In cosmetics, they are widely used as functional substances.

In pharmaceuticals, they have always had a certain use for the preparation of hydrolates, alcoholates or even directly as they are as corrective of the organoleptic characteristics. Lately, they are also systematically used in alternative medicine and, in particular, in the practice of aromatherapy.

The essential oils listed below are those of Italian production.
