Cholesterol is an organic compound belonging to the steroid lipid family. In our organism it carries out various biological functions, important and essential: it is a component of cell membranes, of which it regulates fluidity and permeability; it is the precursor of vitamin D. It is produced mainly by the liver, and to a lesser extent it is introduced in the diet. Whatever its origin, hypercholesterolemia is characterized by a concentration of cholesterol in the blood (cholesterolemia) above the normal value. The increase in blood cholesterol leads over the years to the deposition of cholesterol itself on the endothelium with consequent formation of atherosclerotic plaque.
Hypercholesterolemia, together with age, hypertension, diabetes, cigarette smoking, obesity is a very important cardiovascular risk factor; the presence in a subject of one or more of the conditions listed above determines his cardiovascular risk, that is the probability of undergoing a cardio-cerebrovascular event (angina pectoris, heart attack, stroke) in a given period of time.
