Inflammation is the response that the organism puts in place to counter the harmful agents that may be of a chemical, physical or biological nature that caused it. The purpose of this defense mechanism is to remove the cause of the inflammation.
There are two main types of inflammation:
1. Acute inflammation (events of short duration, lasting a few days);
2. Chronic inflammation (events of long duration, even years).

In inflammation, an accumulation of extravascular fluid in the tissues and more generally in the affected areas occurs as a consequence of the increase in the caliber of the vessels and for a structural modification of the same. The consequence of this process is edema, the most obvious symptom of which is swelling.
