SUPPLEMENT

Indications:
indicated in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia.

Dosage and method of use:
full-term newborn: 2 drops (1 mg of iron) / kg / day;
weight between 1500 g and 2500 g: 4 drops (2 mg of iron) / kg / day;
weight between 1000 g and 1500 g: 6 drops (3 mg of iron) / kg / day;
weight less than 1000 g: 8 drops (4 mg of iron) / kg / day.
Intervention times for prophylaxis:
In the term born the best time to start martial supplementation seems to be from the 6th month of life, while for the preterm, taking into account that the intestinal absorption of iron is poorly regulated in the first month of life, it would seem reasonable to start the enteral administration of iron between the 4th and 8th week, however always before the two months of life.

Characteristics:
iron is an essential micronutrient in many basic biological mechanisms. A deficit during the first year of life has multiple effects:
on erythropoiesis;
on neuronal development;
on cardiac, skeletal, muscular and gastrointestinal functions.
