The term asthenia indicates the loss or lack of strength and energy. It can be secondary to overmenage, prolonged exertion, infectious diseases, surgical procedures, etc.

Fatigue is, by definition, a subjective and unpleasant feeling of incapacity not improved by rest. This latter aspect contrasts asthenia with fatigue, which is a physiological phenomenon secondary to a physical or mental activity of unusual intensity and reduced with rest. Fatigue follows effort, asthenia precedes it. The role of the general practitioner is fundamental in the management of this symptom, which is a daily reason for visiting.
