Curiosity

Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin of group B, also called B9, discovered only in 1939; its name derives from the Latin folium, with reference to green leafy vegetables which are particularly rich in them.

The term 'folate' refers both to the vitamin forms naturally present in food, and to folic acid which is mainly used in supplements or in fortified foods as it is stable to heat, oxidation and more bioavailable.

Our body naturally takes in folate, mostly by consuming green leafy vegetables. However, it is good to know that storing and cooking food destroys over 90% of the folate content and that vegetables at room temperature lose up to 70% of their content in three days.

From the periconceptional period to at least the third month of pregnancy, the daily requirement of folate is established at a minimum of 400 mcg: in fact, the developing fetus consumes these vitamins in large quantities. Using folic acid in the early stages of pregnancy therefore represents a strong support.

Associated with B12 and B6, folic acid plays an important role in controlling homocysteine levels.
