What they are, characteristics and types
Essential oil is the set of volatile substances obtained from plants by pressing, steam distillation or extraction. For millennia they have been used by man for beauty, in cleansing. They are also the first ingredients produced by Esperis since the 1920s, those on which he built his high quality image and for which he opened distilleries in the various regions of Italy.
The essential oils derived from citrus fruits are obtained by cold pressing, while in the case of essential oils derived from herbs the steam distillation method is used.
Essential oils obtained by distillation are often presented in liquid form, of various colors (generally from yellow to brown), those obtained by other methods are sometimes semi-solid in appearance.
Often made up of mixtures of over 50 components, among which we find above all terpene derivatives and oxygenated organic compounds. In cosmetics, they are widely used as functional substances.
In pharmaceuticals, they have always had a certain use for the preparation of hydrolates, alcoholates or even directly as corrective of the organoleptic characteristics. Lately, they are also systematically used in alternative medicine and, in particular, in the practice of aromatherapy.
