Characteristics

Distilled glycerin, or glycerol, with lubricating, osmotic, emollient and moisturizing properties.
Rectally, it usually produces a bowel movement within 15-20 minutes.
The mechanism of action of glycerol is of the hyperosmotic type.
It draws water in the stool and causes dehydration of the tissues with which it comes into contact.
This dehydration determines a local irritating effect that triggers peristaltic contractions with consequent stimulation of the emptying of the rectal ampoule.
It is able to promote peristalsis and the evacuation of the lower intestine by virtue of its irritating action and the ability to soften the thickened fecal mass.
