In 1919 Europe became passionate about Japan and the culture of the Far East. It was at that time that Jacques Guerlain baptized his new perfume Mitsouko. A name that means "mystery" in Japanese and symbolizes a new, passionate and mysterious femininity.

With Mitsouko, Jacques Guerlain pays homage to the heroine of the novel La Bataille, who enjoyed extraordinary success at the time. Mitsouko, a beautiful Japanese bride, secretly loves a British officer. In 1905 the Russo-Japanese conflict broke out. The woman awaits the outcome of the battle with dignity, nobly dominating the feelings that agitate her.
Jacques Guerlain's bold and exceptional idea was to combine a chypre with the decidedly pronounced note of peach, giving this perfume its distinctive modern touch.

Conceived by Georges Chevalier, the bottle is embellished with delicate scrolls in the Art Nouveau style. The avant-garde stopper, in the shape of a hollow heart, represented a real technical feat at the time.
