NOTES ON SOME PLANTS : TANACETUM PARTHENIUM has always been known for its febrifugal properties, but as early as the seventeenth century J. Parkinson also began to recognize its good efficacy as regards headache syndromes. We have to thank Dr. E. Stewart Johnson if, in the late 1970s, a first clinical trial of this remedy was carried out at the “City of London Migraine Clinic”; experimentation from which the first encouraging results were obtained which then gave rise and impetus to the desire to undertake other double-blind investigations with good results. One of these trials (results published in the Lancet medical journal), was carried out in double-blind on 72 patients: the researchers administered to the patients Tanacetum parthenium powder for a period of four months. Upon completion, it was concluded that the plant was able to control the frequency, intensity and duration of migraine attacks. Tanacetum parthenium reduces, in vitro, the secretory activity of platelets, inhibiting their release of serotonin. This could be the mechanism of action implemented by Tanacetum parthenium to reduce migraine attacks; in fact, studies have found abnormal platelet behavior during a migraine attack: platelets release serotonin. Hence the usefulness of serotonin antagonists for migraine prevention. In other bibliographies on migraine, where the use of Tanacetum parthenium has been highlighted, its antispasmodic property on smooth muscles undoubtedly emerges, which would also determine a mild tranquilizing effect. ALNUS GLUTINOSA or black alder, this is its common name, was highly esteemed in folk medicine of the past: its use dates back to the medieval period. In the 18th century, some researchers found it useful as a febrifuge, pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. Its buds have a marked organotropism for the arterial vascular system. Its action is directed above all to the walls of the arterial vessels of the brain (encephalic arteries), where it determines an anti-inflammatory effect. CURRANT NIGRUM, in the buds, contains high concentrations of heteroxides, phenolic derivatives, Vitamin C and amino acids. The same gems can be useful, and be beneficial, in kidney disorders, obesity, dyspepsia and headache. Thanks to its cortisone-like properties, Ribes nigrum has become one of the most important remedies of meristematic therapy; is a great systemic anti-inflammatory. DOG ROSE contains Vitamin C, pectins, tannins, organic acids, carotenoids and other substances that give the plant astringent, vitaminizing, tonic and diuretic properties. The young shoots of Rosa canina have anti-inflammatory and antiallergic properties therefore useful in relapsing inflammation and in the treatment of migraines and headaches resistant to most of the classic therapies. TILIA TOMENTOSA (buds) exerts an anxiolytic, anti-spasmodic and general sedation action; it is the vegetable tranquilizer par excellence. It has a sedative, choleretic, dilating and antispasmodic action, acting simultaneously on the sleep center and on the cortico-hypothalamic axis with a consequent calming effect.
