WHAT IS VITAMIN D3 (Cholecalciferol)

The term Vitamin D refers to all compounds that exhibit the biological activity of calciferol. Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) is the naturally occurring form in mammals, and is 50-100 times more active than ergocalciferol (Vitamin D2).
Cholecalciferol is an inactive form of Vitamin D, therefore an activation is required which occurs in the liver and kidneys.
Man is able to synthesize Vitamin D3 starting from a provitamin precursor. This provitamin is found in the skin, so it absorbs the solar radiant energy which causes it to transform into the active form (cholecalciferol). Adequate sun exposure therefore reduces the need for Vitamin D.
