Ostomy fluids contain digestive enzymes that damage skin cells. These enzymes have an optimum of action at pH ranges close to neutrality. Coming into contact with healthy skin, which is slightly acidic (pH 4-6), they can alter its pH, damaging skin cells with consequent irritation.
