Thanks to the high content of mucilage it is useful in inflammations of the mucous membranes, especially of the respiratory tract and the gastrointestinal tract. Mucilage soothes inflamed mucous membranes. In the gastrointestinal tract they carry out a protective action, forming a mucilaginous layer on the mucous membranes, protecting it from irritating elements (excess acid toxins). In the intestinal tract they can absorb toxins and perform antispasmodic action, increasing the fecal mass and stretching the intestinal walls. Mallow is a valid intestinal regulator for children and the elderly, the laxative properties are not due to mucilage alone, alcoholic extracts free from mucilage, they still show a weak laxative action. Also useful in inflammation of the urinary tract and enuresis. As for the marshmallow, immunostimulating properties are hypothesized. In the guinea pig it stimulated the phagocytic activity of the endothelial reticulum system.
