The intestine represents the tract of the digestive system, responsible for the enzymatic digestion of the ingested material, for the absorption of nutritional molecules, vitamins, ions and water, and for the compaction of indigestible material in preparation for its elimination. The bacterial flora performs many functions: it is able to ferment compounds that otherwise would not be digested; It produces substances with an antimicrobial action that prevents the adhesion of pathogens to the intestinal wall; produces substances such as vitamin K essential for life.
In the course of life, the bacterial flora can undergo phenomena of dysbiosis (alterations of the composition) which may depend on the intake of drugs, age, diet and an irregular lifestyle.
