Iodosorb Ointment
Cadexomer Dressing With Iodine
IODOSORB the “intelligent” antiseptic dressing based on cadxomer technology: it absorbs exudates and releases iodine in a controlled manner.
Features and Benefits
IODOSORB is available in the form of granules, paste in aluminum tube or sterile single-dose paste of dark brown color with support gauze on both sides. The paste consists of cadexomer (modified starch microspheres) with iodine and polyethylene glycol.
Cadexomer matrix
- Removes slough and cell debris
- By gelling, it creates a humid and clean environment favoring the reduction of healing times
- Highly absorbent: the cadexomer matrix can absorb up to 6 times its weight
- Reduces the risk of maceration
- Reduces the frequency of dressing changes
- Controlled and prolonged release of iodine (in relation to the amount of exudate)
- Biodegradable.
Iodine (0.9% content)
- Reduction of the bacterial load
- Broad spectrum bactericidal activity: reduces infection6 including that caused by MRSA (in vitro).
Pain reduction and quality of life improvement
- Reduction of odor produced by bacteria (87% of cases in 4 weeks)
- Pain reduction: mean. poor reduction of pain in venous ulcers starting from the second week of treatment
- Improvement of the patient's quality of life.
Indications
IODOSORB is indicated for the local treatment of chronic exuding wounds. IODOSORB can be used under compression therapy. IODOSORB can be used on infected wounds.
When the product is used on infected wounds, the infection must be monitored and treated according to the local therapeutic protocol.
Contraindications / Precautions for use
IODOSORB should not be used on dry necrosis, nor in patients with known hypersensitivity to iodine or one of its components. Do not use IODOSORB in children, pregnant or breastfeeding patients, or in people with thyroid or renal function disorders (e.g. Hashimoto's thyroiditis or non-toxic nodular goiter).
Precautions for use
The contents of the single pack are for single patient use only.
Do not use IODOSORB near eyes, ears, nose or mouth.
The product is for external use only.
In the first hour after application, IODOSORB can cause mild and transient pain. This indicates that the product is starting to cleanse the wound. Occasionally IODOSORB can cause swelling or redness of the periwound skin. This effect is usually transient.
Contact of the product with periwound or intact skin should be minimized.
When IODOSORB is allowed to dry, a sticky crust may form.
A single application of IODOSORB should not exceed 50 g (equivalent to 5 sachets of 10 g) and in a week it should not exceed 150 g (equivalent to 15 sachets of 10g).
The duration of treatment should not exceed 3 months.
Warnings
There is a potential risk of interaction with lithium, resulting in an increased likelihood of hypothyroidism. Do not use IODOSORB concomitantly with mercurial antiseptics or with taurolidine. Be aware of any interference with thyroid function indices in the case of thyroid diagnostic tests.
Instructions for Use
Application
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after application. After putting on the gloves, clean the wound and periwound area with a gentle stream of water or saline. DO NOT DRY the wound surface.
- Remove the soaked gauze from both sides of the single-dose paste or open the package (envelope or aluminum tube).
- Conform the dressing to the wound surface. Completely cover the wound with an appropriate secondary dressing. Apply a compression bandage, where indicated
Exchange
- IODOSORB must be changed when it is saturated with exudate and has released all the iodine. This is indicated by the loss of color, usually two or three times a week. If the wound is very exuding, it may be necessary to change the dressing every day.
- If necessary, soak the residues for a few minutes before removing them.
- Gently remove IODOSORB using a stream of water or saline solution.
- Before reapplying IODOSORB again, gently absorb any excess fluid, leaving the wound surface slightly moist.
