The isothermal blanket is a device used in emergency as an aid to the patient's thermal stabilization; due to its characteristics it can be used both to maintain its heat in case of hypothermia and to reflect it in case it is necessary to lower its temperature.

How the isothermal blanket is made

Isotemic blanket (matte)

Also known as isothermal sheet or "matte", the isothermal blanket is a light device, easy to use and has the characteristic of being windproof (windproof) and water (waterproof); moreover, it is resistant to thermal excursions in winter and summer.

The isothermal blanket has a thickness similar to that of aluminum foil; however, due to its composition, it is easy to apply on the patient as it does not tend to create ripples.

Once opened, the blanket is made up of two layers, one silver and one gold:

the golden surface is easily crossed by the sun's rays
the silver surface tends to reflect the sun's rays

This composition makes it possible to use this device both to disperse and to retain body heat.

How to use

In the event that it is necessary to protect the patient from a drop in body temperature, the isothermal blanket must be placed in direct contact with his / her dry skin (it is essential, for maximum effectiveness, to remove all clothes) and facing with the golden part towards the outside.

This use is adopted in case of trauma, burn or hypothermia and allows about 80% of body heat to be conserved.

On the contrary, if you want to protect the patient from a dangerous increase in his body temperature, the blanket must be positioned with the silver side facing outwards, so that the blanket performs the function of facilitating the dispersion of body heat and avoid that the one coming from the outside, especially in the form of sunlight, can reach the skin.
