Vitamin K2 , or menaquinone, is a nutrient mainly contained in the fermentation products of soybeans, such as natto , particularly rich in menaquinone-7 (MK-7) , the form with the best bioavailability. Vitamin K2 is also present in some cheeses and in appreciable concentrations in chicken meat, minced meat and in bovine and pork liver.

Vitamin K2 is redistributed through the bloodstream to extrahepatic tissues such as bones and blood vessels ; this explains its greater involvement in processes of osteogenesis, bone mineralization and in the cellular metabolism of vessel walls , as demonstrated by growing scientific evidence.

Many scientific studies have also shown that vitamin K2, consumed as MK-7, is more effective in maintaining bone health as it is more absorbable and biologically active for a longer period than vitamin K1 , which is instead retained by the liver for the activation of coagulation factors. Scientific evidence shows how MK-7 works in close synergy with vitamin D3 on osteogenic differentiation and on the deposition of osteocalcin in the extracellular matrix. Osteocalcin is a protein produced by osteoblasts during bone formation, the activation of which gives it the ability to bind calcium .
