Edema is an accumulation of fluids in the interstitial spaces of the body. The most obvious symptom of edema is swelling. Edema can be linked to local causes (circulatory difficulties such as varicose veins in the legs, skin inflammation, trauma, etc.) or pathologies that produce it throughout the body.

Edema is the result of changes in capillary exchange. Under normal conditions, the capillaries tend to filter in the arterial extremity and reabsorb in the venous one. The volume of filtrate is greater than that reabsorbed: only 90% of the arterial filtrate is reabsorbed at the venous level; the remaining 10% (about 2 liters per day) is recovered by the lymphatic system, which prevents the formation of edema by pouring it into the bloodstream. Inadequate lymphatic drainage can be responsible for edema and swelling (for example, due to trauma, parasites, tumor growth, removal of lymph nodes or growth of fibrous tissue following radiation therapy). Edema is accompanied by inflammation and can be its cause or consequence. Due to an injury, the body induces some changes in the microcirculation (inflammatory response) and there is an increase in capillary permeability, with consequent accumulation of proteins in the interstitial fluids (present in the extracellular space, i.e. between the capillary and the cell). It creates a decrease in plasma colloid-osmotic pressure and an increase in filtration at the level of the capillaries. The result is the appearance of edema.

When the lymphatic drainage system fails, significant amounts of fluid can accumulate in the interstitial spaces. This condition is called lymphedema. The first thing that needs to be done to cure edema is to counteract the disease or situation (standing, wrong diet, ...) that generated it, without underestimating the importance of supporting the lymphatic system.

The "compression" therapy (mechanically helping the lymphatic system) is of valid help, as, in the most severe cases, the surgical one, aimed at restoring a compromised lymphatic flow.

The basic treatment is carried out with drug therapy.

According to the "Italian Guidelines on lymphedema", lymphedema, beyond the appropriate therapies to counter the cause, to an antibiotic and antithrombotic therapy where necessary, must be treated with the use of "benzopyrones" (eg: diosmin) to the documented action on the reduction of capillary permeability, reduction of macrophage activity and prolymphokinetic action. Again the Guidelines emphasize that proteolytic substances (such as bromelain) ensure safe help. To support the lymphatic system, in addition to adequate muscle movement, it is necessary to:

• Adequate lymphatic peristalsis (rhythmic contraction of the lymphatic vessels)

• A lymphatic composition with less voluminous protein molecules

• A minor "extravasation" and load of extravascular fluids

• Lower hydraulic pressure (lower volume and more venous tone)

• An anti-inflammatory action

To support these processes, LINFOCINETIC® has been formulated.

PROPERTY'

Properties attributed to individual nutrients by International Literature:

Bromelain

Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme complex used as an anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous. It is particularly effective in inflammatory states of the soft tissues associated with trauma, in localized inflammation (especially in the presence of edema), and in postoperative tissue reactions.

VITEXIN (from Hieracium Pilosella dry extract)

The dry extract of Hieracium Pilosella is known for its diuretic and draining properties, in fact it guarantees a marked increase in diuresis with a notable increase in chlorides and nitrogenous substances in the urine. Its use is useful in all cases of water retention and in edematous states.

Diosmin:

prolongs the vasoconstrictor effect of noradrenaline at the level of the venous walls, increasing venous return. Diosmin increases lymphatic drainage by increasing the frequency and intensity of lymphatic contractions, increasing the functionality of the lymphatic capillary network. Diosmin reduces the activity of leukocytes in the capillaries by reducing inflammation.
