What is Lithosolv used for?

Lithosol is a daily supplement of alkalizing potassium salts to help restore and maintain the systemic and urinary acid-base balance.

How does Lithosolv work?

The changed dietary habits, linked to diets oriented to excessive intake of proteins or fats, tend to shift the metabolic balance of the organism towards an excessive acid load (1). This condition would facilitate, with its prolongation, the onset of some pathologies, such as osteoporosis and kidney stones (2), which often occur, precisely with a low presence of citrates in the urine and with an acidic urinary pH (5.0 -5.5). The maintenance of these urinary acid values would more easily induce the precipitation of uric acid present in the urine and the consequent formation of uric acid stones. On the contrary, the correction of this state of acidosis with alkalizing elements would favor the dissolution and solubilization of urinary uric acid.

A diet rich in fruit and vegetables is the main source of alkalizing substances, designed to correct the excessive acid load (3).

When to use Lithosolv?

The dietary approach alone is not always sufficient but a dietary supplement may be necessary. This occurs above all in elderly subjects, in people who perform intense physical activity, in postmenopausal women or in subjects with diets strongly rich in proteins.

LITHOSOLV'compresse is a food supplement of alkaline potassium salts able to correct the excessive acid load, which can be directly evaluated through the measurement of urinary pH; this can be done easily by using the strips attached to the LITHOSOLV tablet package.

The urinary pH is a value that varies throughout the day with more significant drops during the night and in the morning; for this reason it is preferable to measure it especially upon awakening. If the pH value is lower than 6 it is advisable, if confirmed by the doctor, to make any correction by taking LITHOSOLV tablets in the morning and in the evening, then verifying its urinary alkalizing action with the appropriate strips.
In the presence of uratic stones it is advisable to maintain the urinary pH between 6.5-6.8 to favor the dissolution of the uric acid crystals (4). A daily water intake of 2.5-3 liters is also recommended to facilitate the dilution of urinary uric acid (4).

Dosage and Method of Intake

Each tablet contains 1g of potassium citrate, equal to 390 mg of Potassium (or 10mEq), in a formulation that guarantees a prolonged release over time.

The daily dosage of LITHOSOLV tablets is 2 tablets divided into two daily administrations (unless otherwise indicated by the doctor) taken on a full stomach. The particular retard formulation of the tablet allows a continuous release of alkalizing substances ensuring constant pH values throughout the day.
In the event that the minimum pH, measured in the morning upon waking up, is still lower than 6.0, it is advisable to double the dosage reaching 4 daily tablets always divided into 2 doses.

Contraindications and Precautions

LITHOSOLV tablets are contraindicated in patients suffering from hyperkalaemia or conditions that may predispose to the onset of such plasma alteration. Among these conditions, chronic renal insufficiency and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus are included.

Interactions

The concomitant intake of LITHOSOLV tablets and potassium-sparing drugs (triamtereoe, spironolactone, amiloride) could deceive hyperkalaemia. It is therefore advisable to monitor the progress of kalaemia. No interactions with other drugs are known.

Hypersensitivity and Unwanted Effects

LITHOSOL V'compresse is generally well tolerated. Rarely, in particularly sensitive subjects, mild gastrointestinal disturbances such as abdominal heaviness, nausea and occasionally diarrhea may develop.

Packaging

The product is sold in a bottle of 100 ready-to-use retard tablets.

Use of pH strips

Collect urine in a container. With dry hands. take a strip from the transparent sachet. Immerse the strip in the urine for 1 second, remove it and drain the excess urine. The wet part of the strip will take on a different color depending on the pH of the urine. Within 2 minutes, I will see the color of the stripe and or that of the reference color guide, present in the package. Read the value corresponding to the color that comes closest to that of the strip.

Disposable strips should be disposed of in household waste after use.
Note: any changes in the color of the unused strips do not affect their accuracy.
