SYSTEMIC PHOTOPROTECTION TO PREVENT PHOTOINDUCTED DAMAGES

Exposure to UV radiation and "Blue light" (solar, phototherapy lamps, tanning lamps or monitors) causes an intense production of free radicals, substances that irreversibly damage cellular DNA and proteins. In addition to the immediately visible effects (erythema and burns), the accumulation of damage induces late harmful effects that manifest themselves with premature skin aging, loss of skin elasticity, macular degeneration and cataracts in the eye. The organism has endogenous defenses against free radicals, represented by antioxidant substances. However, these have limited capabilities, especially in subjects with a light phototype and in case of exposure to UV for prolonged periods but concentrated in a short time. The production of melanin is another defense mechanism aimed at protecting the skin, but also the retina, the iris and all ocular structures from photo-induced damage; its deficiency increases the sensitivity of the eye to sunlight, favoring ocular degenerative diseases.
