Indications

Maca fully responds to the dictates of modern food science; in fact it is low in fats (among which unsaturated ones prevail), but provides a good supply of carbohydrates and proteins, as well as fiber, vitamins and mineral salts. Particularly interesting is the content of essential amino acids, ie those which are not adequately synthesized by our body, and therefore must be introduced with the diet. The essential amino acids are: histidine (necessary in children), isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, valine and tryptophan. Cysteine is formed from methionine and phenylalanine. It is also worth noting the presence of essential fatty acids (oleic, linoleic and arachidonic acids). Among the biologically active components of maca, we remember glucosinolates, containing sulfur glycosides which are also found in other species of the Brassicaceae family (for example in broccoli). Maca is rich in benzyl glucosinolates, glucotropoline and p-methoxy benzyl glucosinolate. These are 10 times more concentrated in the fresh root than in the dried one. By triturating the root, the enzyme myrosinase, contained in the vacuoles of the plant, escapes into the cytosol of the cell, acting on these compounds and transforming them into isothiocyanates. Aromatic isothiocyanates, especially benzyl isothiocyanate and p-methoxybenzyl isothiocyanate, are biologically active compounds which have shown anticancer activities in several pharmacological studies. These compounds have also been found in Tropaeolum tuberosum, a species believed to be capable of increasing human fertility. According to the most accredited hypothesis, the increase in fertility caused by maca is not due so much to glucosinolates, but to the presence of four alkaloids not yet characterized, called macaine 1, 2, 3 and 4. Despite these differences, it remains scientifically proven , that the intake of maca is able to increase libido and fertility in various animal species, and there are numerous testimonies, which prove this action also in the human species. In the root of Lepidium meyenii there are also flavonoids, saponins, tannins and phytosterols: brassicasterol, ergosterol, ergostadienol, campesterol, sitosterol, stigmasterol and b-ecdysone. The latter is responsible for the anabolic action.
