Magnesium (Mg) is the fourth most abundant cation in the body where it performs numerous vital functions:
- Together with Phosphorus and Calcium it participates in the processes of mineralization and development of the skeletal system.
- Regulates the excitability of the nerve cell and muscle fiber; in particular it has shown a calming and muscle relaxant action respectively.
- Magnesium is also essential for good cardiovascular function, in particular it participates in the regulation of electrolyte balance and in the prevention of potassium losses, promotes vasodilation and has demonstrated an antithrombotic and antiplatelet effect.
- Finally, Magnesium is the cofactor of numerous enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, and in particular it is the cofactor of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate), one of the main sources of energy for cells.
A magnesium deficiency can interfere with the transmission of nerve and muscle impulses and cause irritability and nervousness.
