What is Melos Gel used for?
Melos gel is the first oral gel based on melatonin (2%) and chlorhexidine (0.12%) useful for counteracting oxidative stress in the mouth and mucosal appendages. Melos is Patent Pending. Oxidative stress manifests itself as an alteration of the mucous membranes that cover the oral cavity. Melos gel has been designed to act quickly and deeply in mucositis, better known as stomatitis. It is also active in oral carcinomas, periodontitis, canker sores, gingivitis and is a valid adjuvant during common toothache and trigeminal neuralgia. The gel formulation allows for a greater and more focused activity of the active ingredients on site. Melos® gel is enriched with natural substances such as Calendula, Melaleuca, Lavender and Hypericum as well as a series of emollient and anti-reddening substances such as Argan oil and Sunflower oil.
How does Melos work?
Melatonin works as a powerful antioxidant. It acts directly against oxygen and nitrogen free radicals. It also acts indirectly by favoring the endogenous production of catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione. Therefore, it prevents the inflammation generated by the uncontrolled activity of free radicals. Furthermore, melatonin has immunostimulating properties. Increases type 2 interleukin, CD4 + lymphocytes and gamma-type interferon. It also reduces fungal infections by promoting the phagocytic activity of our body's defensive cells. Attenuates viral infections due to the increased production of IL-1 beta. Melatonin is a natural anti-inflammatory and inhibits the COX-2 enzyme by also binding to the active sites of COX-1 and COX-2. It has a direct anti-cancer effect, inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. For these reasons it can find application in effectively combating oral carcinomas and the effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy that manifest themselves as mucositis and other diseases of the oral cavity.
Chlorhexidine is a mouth antiseptic and is active against Gram +, Gram - bacteria and fungi.
A synergy of actions is created between melatonin and chlorhexidine. Chlorhexidine eliminates the surplus of bacterial and fungal loads and favors an intense and deep activity of Melatonin.
How to use Melos
It is advisable to apply a thin layer of Melos gel on the affected area with the help of a clean fingertip or a cotton swab. It is advisable to let the product act for more than a minute.
Melos warnings
The product may cause drowsiness. Take this into account if you are doing jobs that require attention. In this case, only one evening application is recommended, half an hour before going to sleep.
