The integrity of the retinal blood barrier guarantees the functionality of the retina and the maintenance of visual acuity; vice versa, the loss of barrier properties allows the exudation of plasma components and the accumulation of extra cellular fluids at the retinal level, altering both the anatomy and the physiology of the retina.

Diabetic retinopathy can manifest itself in a non-proliferating form when the altered vessels have areas of weakening, with dilation of the wall (microaneurysms) and can bleed producing retinal hemorrhages that can lead to edema and / or ischemia.

In the proliferating form, however, the new vessels are anomalous as they have a very fragile wall and grow randomly on the surface of the retina. They bleed easily, giving rise to vitreous hemorrhages, and lead to the formation of scar tissue, which, by contracting progressively, can cause wrinkling and / or detachment of the retina.

Retinal vein occlusion can affect the central retinal vein, or only a branch of the same. The obstacle to venous circulation determines the development of ischemic areas and / or macular edema which are associated with a significant deterioration in visual acuity.

Other causes of retinal edema are uveitis, post-operative inflammation (cataract surgery and / or retinal detachment), central serous membranes and inflammatory vasculopathies in general.
