Aromatic perennial herbaceous plant of the Composite family, known and appreciated in folk medicine in Germany as early as the 16th century. It is native to the northern and central mountainous and submontane regions of the northern hemisphere. Resistant to frost, it grows and develops luxuriantly in alpine pastures (above 1000 m), rarely found in the plains. In the Nordic countries the leaves are much narrower than in the temperate mountain areas, therefore in the past it was believed that they were two different species, respectively Arnica montana and A. angustifolia (today united only in the mountain species).
