-DURATION OF LIFE: The duration of our life, and that of other animals, is mainly determined by mechanisms aimed at regulating the levels of body maintenance and repairing functions.

-AGING: Many diseases cause accelerated aging due to the decline in cell division capacity linked to the fact that the telomeres (from the Greek Telos "End") that protect the end parts of chromosomes get shorter and shorter as cells become divide. This is due to the absence of the telomerase enzyme, which allows the telomere to be rebuilt after division. Normally this enzyme is expressed only in the germ cells of the testis and ovaries and in certain adult stem cells, as these cells must be preserved from aging. In premature aging, telomere shortening occurs more rapidly. In diseases that cause premature aging, telomere shortening occurs more rapidly. Many studies have highlighted the link between the inactivation of telomerase and the presence of free radicals.
