Components and Indications

Nitric Oxide (NO) is a powerful vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet adhesion and aggregation, of smooth muscle cell proliferation and chemotaxis. It is also able to negatively modulate the production of vasoconstrictive substances. The central role that the NO molecule plays in the homeostasis of correct endothelial function is therefore evident. NO production decreases with age as well as in some diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and hypertension, morbid conditions, all known for increased cardiovascular NO mortality. NO synthesis is predominantly dependent on the availability of arginine (ARG). Recent studies have shown that NO synthesis is also strongly influenced by the presence of thiols. In consideration of the data from numerous international studies, it is evident that ARG and thiols (N-acetylcysteine NAC) have a positive synergistic effect on NO synthesis. The supplementation of ARG and NAC, through an increase in NO production, are of therapeutic importance in the treatment and prevention of endothelial alteration of these diseases. In fact, the use of ARG is able to improve endothelial function in normal subjects and in patients with coronary artery disease, hypercholesterolemia and hypertension, diabetes mellitus, in erectile deficit. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of arginine (ARG) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in male infertility.
