WHAT IS HYPOCHLOROUS ACID?
Hypochlorous acid has the following characteristics: It is able to eliminate 99.99% of bacteria in just 15 seconds. It inhibits bacterial lipases, preventing the increase in meibum viscosity and the consequent obstruction of the meibomian glands.
DYSFUNCTION OF THE MEIBOMIUM GLANDS (MGD)
MGD is the leading cause of evaporative dry eye. 86% of dry eye patients have MGD. This is because there is an overpopulation of bacteria on the eyelids and lashes in MGD. These bacteria release enzymes such as lipases, which will cause an increase in the viscosity of the meibum and an obstruction of the meibomian glands. Due to this obstruction, the glands will not be able to properly produce the lipid layer of the tear which will evaporate faster.
