Cod liver oil is back in the limelight thanks to the great nutritional importance attributed to omega 3 fatty acids, of which it is particularly rich. On average, the weight of the liver of an adult cod is 2.5-2.6 grams per 100 grams of fish; its oil content is around 30%.
The anti-rachitic action of cod liver oil, together with the effect of sunlight, improves the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphorus and increases their deposit in the teeth and bones, making them less prone to fractures. For this reason it is considered a valid dietary supplement in the treatment of osteoporosis and osteomalacia.
