The kinematic viscosity is raised to 20,000-50,000 centistokes, with an osmolality of approximately 340 milliosmole. Sodium hyaluronate is a high molecular weight polysaccharide, composed of glucuronate of sodium and acetylglucosamine. Sodium hyaluronate is distributed in all tissues of the body and is present, in high concentrations, in tissues such as the humor, the synovial fluid, the umbilical cord and the skin. Sodium hyaluronate is a tissue lubricant and is believed to play an important role in modulating the interaction between adjacent tissues. It can also act as a viscoelastic support for intra-tissue separation. Although different sodium diyaluronate preparations may have different molecular weights, they are all believed to have the same chemical structure.
The sodium hyaluronate contained in Orthovisc has an average molecular weight greater than one million daltons. Non-pyrogenic and non-inflammatory solution.
